How do tax preparers collect fees?

Tax preparers will usually file electronically all tax forms for their clients. If the client is getting a refund then the preparer will take his fees out of the refund and have it sent to his account and the rest of the refund would be sent to any account the taxpayer would like. If the taxpayer is not receiving a refund, then the taxpayer would be responsible for the full amount of the fees. It would be up to the preparer’s office whether or not a schedule of payments could be made by the taxpayer for services rendered.

Does a tax preparer have to sign the return?

More than 130 million individuals file their income taxes electronically. When a tax return is filed electronically, it has to be electronically signed. When taxpayers use a third party to help them prepare their taxes, then that preparer must also electronically sign the return in order to e-file the forms.

Our preparer will inspect the taxpayer’s photo ID, like a driver’s license, passport, visa or military ID to validate the taxpayer’s information. When filing by e-file it is required that the preparer verifies the taxpayer’s information.

The preparer can then sign the 8879 form that verifies he has inspected the tax payer’s information. The preparer will then put in his pin number and signs the form.
